Over the last decade, bathrooms have shifted from being small, purely functional rooms to becoming some of the most carefully considered spaces in a home or building.
Trend reports and design media now talk about spa-like sanctuaries, wellness spaces and “liveable luxury” bathrooms – rooms with larger showers, soaking tubs, layered lighting and warmer materials that feel calm and restorative, not clinical.
This evolution is about more than looks. Bathrooms are expected to:
- Support daily rituals and downtime.
- Connect visually with the rest of the interior.
- Be easier to clean and maintain.
- And adapt to changing needs over time.
Modern bathroom fixtures – basins, toilets, and integrated furniture – now underpin all of that. They’re not the afterthought; they’re the framework.
Top bathroom design trends driving change
In our own 2025 Bathroom Trends article, we talk about bathrooms becoming calmer, more curated spaces. International trend reports echo this: for example, House Beautiful’s bathroom trends highlight spa-inspired layouts, natural materials and peaceful, retreat-like rooms as defining directions for the future of bathroom design.
From a fixtures point of view, three themes line up very clearly with what we design and specify every day.
1. Spa-inspired, clutter-free layouts
The first noticeable shift is away from “one fixture per wall” planning towards furniture-led compositions: vanities, integrated basins and wall-hung cabinets that read as a single, calm volume.
This is where basins and matching furniture play a quiet but important role. A piece like the Matrix round countertop basin is a good example:
- It’s proportioned to sit neatly on modern cabinets.
- Crafted from high-quality ceramic with a smooth, non-porous, scratch-resistant surface.
- And designed to integrate visually into a continuous line rather than stand alone.
Compatible with our Comfort ribbed 600mm wall-hung oak cabinet , this kind of basin turns storage, plumbing and washing into one resolved element. The result is a bathroom that feels more like an extension of the living space, and less like a leftover service room.

2. Warm materials and texture, anchored by ceramics
Trend forecasters such as Decorilla point to earthy neutrals, soft textures and natural finishes as key directions for bathroom design – think warm stone tones, timber accents and gently rounded forms.
In these spaces, sanitaryware does two things at once:
- Brilliant white vitreous china keeps the room feeling crisp and clean.
- Subtle form and texture in the ceramics themselves pick up on the wider material story.
Our Comfort range was developed with exactly this balance in mind. A piece like the Comfort oval ribbed countertop basin introduces a soft fluted detail at the rim, echoing ribbed joinery or vertical tiles, while still offering the practical benefits of scratch and germ-resistant vitreous china.
Where stronger contrast is required – for example, in monochrome or more graphic bathrooms – black ceramics from our Eclipse offering act as punctuation within otherwise warm, neutral schemes. The design language remains simple; the colour does the work.
3. Basins and toilets as quiet design statements
Modern bathrooms increasingly rely on a small number of well-chosen elements doing a lot of work. Basins and toilets are no longer purely functional pieces; their geometry, mounting type and junctions with walls and floors all affect how spacious and calm a room feels.
Basins: sculptural vs seamless
- Countertop basins create height and presence on the vanity, making them ideal for primary suites and guest bathrooms where a subtle “wow” moment is appropriate.
- Vanity and undercounter basins keep surfaces visually quiet, best suited to family bathrooms and multi-unit projects where easy cleaning and storage are the priority.
Toilets: clean lines, easy maintenance
The move to wall-hung and back-to-wall toilet designs is now firmly established in both residential and commercial work. These formats support:
- Cleaner lines and fewer visual interruptions.
- Straightforward floor cleaning around and under the pan.
- A more “architectural” read of the room.
Within our Zara range, the Zara round rimless wall-hung pan with soft close seat is a good illustration: a compact, rimless vitreous-china bowl, lifted off the floor, with a soft-close seat as standard. It’s designed as much for the way it sits in the space as for day-to-day use and cleaning.
Our Comfort rimless wall-hung pan with soft close seat follows the same logic with slightly softer geometry, which tends to work well in family bathrooms and hospitality spaces.
All wall-hung pans can be paired with the Lecico concealed cistern, which is hidden behind the wall to maintain a streamlined look and optimise space, further enhancing the room’s architectural appeal and simplifying maintenance.
This can then be integrated with either the Lecico glass actuator plate (available in black, red, and white) or the Lecico PurePress actuator plate (offered in black, chrome, or white) to match your bathroom’s aesthetic.
4. Inclusive and age-friendly bathrooms
A second, equally important evolution is the expectation that bathrooms should work comfortably for more people over time. Accessibility is appearing more often in mainstream design media, and closer to home we unpack this in our article Disability Bathrooms: The Complete Guide to Creating a Safe, Stylish, and Accessible Space.
From a fixtures perspective, there are a few straightforward moves that make a significant difference:
- Slightly higher pans that reduce effort when sitting and standing.
- Clear space around and underneath basins.
- Layouts that allow for grab rails and support elements to be added later without redesigning the room.
The Comfort round raised height CC dual flush box set embodies this thinking. It looks like a contemporary close-coupled toilet, but the raised height and soft-close seat improve comfort for a wide range of users. Installed alongside standard Comfort or Matrix pieces, it keeps the visual language consistent while quietly adding an extra layer of usability.
In more specialised projects, our Care+ assisted mobility solutions build on the same design language with additional support and clearances, so accessible spaces still feel like part of the same overall scheme.

5. Compact spaces, considered choices
Finally, a lot of innovation is happening in smaller bathrooms. The floor area is tight, but expectations are high: these spaces are no longer allowed to feel like an afterthought.
Here, the details of fixtures matter a great deal:
- Shorter projection wall-hung pans, paired with the Lecico concealed cistern, open up circulation in narrow rooms.
- Smaller basins provide a usable bowl without dominating the plan.
- Slim, wall-hung cabinets keep the footprint clear while still offering storage.
Because our Matrix, Zara and Comfort ranges each include multiple sizes and installation types, the same core design language can be adapted from a main en-suite to a compact guest WC without changing brand or aesthetic.
If you’re considering a renovation or a new build and not sure which combination of ranges to use where, our team is happy to advise.

Fixtures as the framework of modern bathroom design
Bathroom fixtures define:
- How open or enclosed a room feels.
- How surfaces and materials read together.
- How easy the space is to live with and maintain.
- And how comfortably it can adapt to different users and stages of life.
As Lecico South Africa, our role is to design that framework carefully. We focus on fixtures that are:
- Functional – considered in their ergonomics, installation and day-to-day use.
- Stylish – quietly aligned with current directions such as spa-inspired layouts, warmer materials and textured details.
- Built to last – in high-quality vitreous china and ceramic, with robust finishes and long-term warranties to match.
As bathroom design continues to evolve, we expect fixtures to carry even more of this load – acting as the constant, architectural layer that allows colours, textures and styling to change around them, while the room itself remains coherent, comfortable and future-ready.
